Europe Day held on 9 May every year celebrates peace and unity in Europe. The date marks the anniversary of the historical ‘Schuman declaration‘. At a speech in Paris in 1950, Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister, set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe’s nations unthinkable. A treaty creating such a body was signed just under a year later. Schuman’s proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union.

This year, the Europe Day celebrations in the Turkish Cypriot community took place at Selimiye Square in Nicosia on Saturday, 25 May 2019 from 10:00 – 13:00. EU Member State Representatives, EU supported projects by various Civil Society Organisations and EU funded Technical Assistance Projects had information stands at the event. In addition to this, there was an entertainment programme with concerts, dance performances, face-painting & henna tattoo stands, puppet shows.

The Go Social Cy team was also there, sharing information regarding social entrepreneurship, the project and opportunities for interested individuals to join our efforts. Thank you EU for hosting us!
